What’s to love about grains?
Fibre… Whole grains contain a high level of fiber. Fiber is a vital element for human digestion. I call it the balancer. It balances your blood sugar and your appetite which are two crucial factors when it comes to managing your weight and your mood.
Minerals & Vitamins… Grains contain high levels of B- vitamins and Iron which help the body maintain adequate energy levels.
Phytonutrients, antioxidants, and enzymes… The plants that produce grain seeds, naturally have phytonutrients to protect it from insects and fungus. When we ingest seeds, these compounds convert to antioxidants and enzymes which help with our overall health and vitality.
What should you look out for?
Processed Grains… Packaged food that is made from grains has been refined so that the fiber and most of the nutrients are removed to produce a dense carbohydrate food source. In most cases, sugar, fat, and salt are added to improve taste, texture and shelf life. Processed grains cause a host of problems for our digestive system and our overall health.
Quality & Quantity… Awareness of the quality (are they whole or processed grains) and the quantity of grains you eat is crucial to understand if grains can help you improve your health or will harm you.
What are the myths:
Are you gluten sensitive?
Food marketers have been aggressively promoting gluten-free foods and blaming gluten for health and weight problems. Because of this, many people assume they are gluten sensitive and banish all grains from their diet. In most cases, they are not gluten sensitive; rather they are not aware of the quality and quantity of the foods that they were eating.
Do grains cause inflammation and weight gain?
There is no scientific evidence that grains and gluten cause inflammation and weight gain. Again, this is more of a question of what quality of grains and the quantity you are eating.
What you need to do next:
- Eat more whole, unprocessed grains
- Eat more alternative non-grain carbohydrate foods
- Self-test to see if you are gluten sensitive
- Or, undergo medical testing for gluten sensitivity and celiac disease
