Since I can remember I’ve always had a fear of needles.
Perhaps my childhood visits to the hospital with a rare blood infection that threatened to take my young life was where it all began, but regardless, admittedly, I still have a fear of needles.
It didn’t matter how much bigger I became, through growing into adulthood or with vigorous weight training, I still remained afraid of needles.
In some ways, it served me as I was also afraid to inject steroids when I was bodybuilding or inject heroin when I was living life as an addict.
But it didn’t serve me recently when I was laying in the dentist chair and hearing the dentist call out his weapon of choice; “pass me the 27 gage short…”
I’ve had plenty of years to overcome my fear of needles and many tattoos as evidence to that, but still, in that dentist chair I felt my body tense up as I grabbed hold of the chair handles like I was bracing myself for unimaginable pain.
As the dentist proceeded to insert the needle into my mouth, I started to realize that it felt like a mild sting and nothing like torture I was anticipating.
And for the first time, I decided to relax my body and to start breathing again.
I questioned why I was contracting in fear and was curious what would happen if I didn’t.
What did happen was a sense of freedom from fear that made the experience so much easier.
To paraphrase and combine what two friends of mine have said;
Contraction is life taking expansion is life-giving.
When we pass from this world we physically contract.
So if our intention is to live life fully, then we would need to relax enough so that expansion is possible.
In essence, if we allow fear to overpower us, it will take life from us, but if we can practice more relaxing, observing, and listening, we will be granted the blessing of a life fully lived.
